Back to Rome
To get to the Web in the old days one had to be at home or someplace with wireless connections, like a hotel, or a Starbucks. Back then, near the turn of the millennium, when wireless connections were new, we could not use them to experience virtual reality like we can today. In fact, I remember being at the Forum in Rome in 2002, and trying to bring up some early photos of the Coliseum on my smart phone, but I couldn't reach the Web. I had to wait until I got back to the hotel to connect. By then I was into other activities and I never did pull up the pictures, much less get into the virtual activities that we can today. It was a shame too because even though today, in 2032, now that I am here again at the Coliseum enjoying a full range of both real and virtual interaction, being 105 years old I don't have the dexterity to participate like the younger members of the tour. Even so, it has been great fun to watch the them mixing it up as gladiators. I was Claudius and gave a thumbs up on several who really gave a good fight. Some of the group wanted to stay for the execution of prisoners, which was going to be done by throwing them to the lions, but even in simulation I didn’t think that would be my cup of tea.
